BMW Timing Chains

Cambelt vs timing chains – your BMW may need this doing

  • We replace cambelts

  • We replace timing chains

One of the more common BMW specific issues that we repair are timing chain faults on 2.0 and 3.0 diesel engines.

Generally people are familiar with the idea of a cambelt on a car and the importance that is replaced on a schedule according to the manufacturers information.

Timing chains are fitted to certain vehicles and these are meant to last the lifetime of the vehicle, however this is not always the case.

There have been failures of timing chains – usually caused by irregular servicing, or a lack of maintenance.  Sometimes the timing chain will fail for no apparent reason.

On certain BMW vehicles, there is no fault code to indicate a failing timing chain – but a specific sound can often identify the issue.

Of course, it is much more cost effective to replace a worn or stretched timing chain before failure – work we complete frequently, and saves money by not having engine failure caused by a snapped or slipped timing chain.

If you can hear a tapping noise from the engine bay of your car, pop by let Grants of Wellington have a look – we could help to save you thousands on a potential failed engine!
